After being released from jail/prison, many workers with records are forced into low-wage, grueling jobs. Having worked for free while incarcerated, they now shuffle between temp agencies that won’t hire them directly because of their past. Stigmatized in the community, they often face discrimination at every turn. Yet, through Beyond the Bars, they find family: a community that helps them sharpen leadership skills, challenge injustice, and transform their futures.

As Freddy P. puts it: “My arrest took me from being a manager to finding ditch-digging construction jobs through temp agencies and I honestly thought I was alone and had no other options. I'm grateful to have been organized into Beyond the Bars. I am the leader I am today because of this community. I joined the fight during our phone calls campaign and have learned that when we fight, we win.”
