Building Worker Power Beyond the Bars
We are the first worker center in Miami—and the nation—dedicated to organizing workers with criminal records. Our members, often stuck in precarious, low-wage jobs, are creating a future where dignity, fair wages, and second chances are possible.
Our mission: to build social and economic power through worker organizing, advocacy, and education—confronting the systems that exploit and criminalize our people.
Our Impact So Far:
💥 $100M+ in jail debt and fees eliminated, transforming the lives of 60,000+ Miami-Dade residents.
💥 Dozens of worker leaders trained in advocacy and organizing through our fellowship program.
💥 Hundreds mobilized to demand better labor protections and fight carceral policies.
💥 Arts programs launched, amplifying the voices of incarcerated artists through poetry slams and workshops.
As Freddy P. puts it: “My arrest took me from being a manager to finding ditch-digging construction jobs through temp agencies and I honestly thought I was alone and had no other options. I'm grateful to have been organized into Beyond the Bars. I am the leader I am today because of this community. I joined the fight during our phone calls campaign and have learned that when we fight, we win.”
Be part of the movement transforming industries, empowering workers, and creating pathways to justice!

Beyond the Bars is a worker organization fighting for better working conditions for low-wage, criminalized workers in South Florida. Through education, advocacy, and organizing, we challenge the exploitation of workers with arrest records — especially those bound by probation work requirements or subjected to coerced labor in prisons and work release camps.
