Exchange for Change

Exchange for Change is ten-years old! E4C has grown from a single class of 17 students to over 75 classes annually, reaching nearly 2000 students in state prisons, county jails, and juvenile centers. Our unique writing courses—ranging from journalism to poetry, trauma recovery to memoir— gives a voice to the voiceless, empowering them with tools for personal growth and communication.

Your donation funds diverse classes in creative and practical skills, including our signature Exchange Class, where incarcerated students connect with university students through anonymous letter exchanges. In collaboration with institutions like the University of Miami and Florida International University, we offer students Continuing Education Units that support their personal and professional development.

🖋️ Publications & Recognition

Our students’ work has reached the public through our literary journal Don't Shake the Spoon,  more than a dozen online and print publications and won awards from the prestigious PEN America Prison Writing contest. 

🤝 Community Connection

We bring community members into correctional facilities through Prison Visits for Change, offering direct interactions that break down barriers. These visits, alongside our graduation showcases, foster understanding and support across communities.
