Holding politicians and powerbrokers in your community accountable isn't easy, and it's not free.

Let’s face it, most large local news organizations only come into your community when the story is big and is of interest to the entire area. Similarly, most hyper-local news organizations stick to covering the kinds of stories that aren't going to ruffle any feathers (because in most cases, their funding is tied to the very people they are writing about, making them unwilling to "bite the hand that feeds them."). This leaves a critical gap.

Who's going to hold your village council accountable? Who’s going to file a public records request to find out how your manager plans to spend your tax dollars? Who's going to read the local police blotters? Who’s going to cover what’s going on in your neighborhood’s schools or on your streets? Who’s going report on private governments like the HOA’s and Condo Associations in your community. This is town-by-town, neighborhood by neighborhood, real journalism that hits home... your home.

Some people might not like it, but this is information that you have a right to know, and nobody else is going to bring it you. That's because real journalism is expensive and real journalism makes powerful people uncomfortable.

This is why it's critical that the funding for this type of journalism is INDEPENDENT of the community it covers.

THIS TYPE OF JOURNALISM NEEDS YOU!!!

The first of these hyper-local newsrooms was the Key Biscayne INDEPENDENT.

The Liberty City INDEPENDENT just launched and is actively covering that community.

With your generous donation, Miam Fourth Estate can continue to prove that hyper-local is the future of news. Who knows, if we raise enough money here, we might even start an INDEPENDENT in your town.
