The documentary "Life is a Matter of Choices: The Coach Tom Moore Story" chronicles the remarkable 35-year basketball coaching career of Tom Moore at Southwest Miami High School. Known for his approach of developing character through tough love, Coach Moore is depicted as a transformative figure who not only shaped skilled basketball players but also fostered personal growth.

Through a blend of interviews, archival footage, and heartfelt testimonials, the film reveals how Moore challenged his players by demanding high standards while also providing them the freedom to learn from their experiences. This balance of accountability and independence allowed his athletes to develop both on and off the court.

On the court, his teams reached top 10 rankings in the state of Florida numerous times, culminating when they defeated the most dominant program in the country - Miami High - on the road; the first such defeat for Miami High in a decade. The Southwest program also produced several All-County and All-State players, with some players going on to play college basketball.

Beyond basketball, the documentary highlights Moore's role as a father figure for many players, particularly during their toughest moments. His unwavering support and guidance extended into their personal lives, helping them navigate challenges and make positive choices. "Life is a Matter of Choices" serves as a powerful tribute to Coach Tom Moore’s enduring legacy, illustrating how his influence reached far beyond the game, inspiring generations to strive for excellence and resilience in all aspects of life.

This documentary is being led by a former Southwest Miami basketball player - Tito Gil (1997) - in collaboration with Miami Film Lab, a non-profit led by Jennifer Orta Castellanos. As life would have it, Jennifer is a graduate of Southwest Miami High School (2004) - having gone through the schools' film program - and has first-hand knowledge of the impact Coach Moore made on his players.

Why we’re making this film: We’re making this film to honor the extraordinary impact Coach Moore had on his players, while highlighting that this is precisely how we build, expand and change the fabric of a community. Coach Moore deeply impacted the lives of over 100 players, which means he changed the trajectory of 100 fathers, husbands, leaders, community builders and ultimately households. You don’t need a NBA title to achieve this level of impact. This is done through purpose, integrity, work ethic and consistency. What a life...what a legacy.

Fundraising Note: We're starting this campaign at $15,000, however, please let us know if you're aware of grants, programs, or donors that might be interested in further supporting this film.
