Mission and Approach

Founded in 1985, Miami Homes For All’s mission is to ensure that everyone in Miami-Dade has a safe, affordable place to call home. 

To achieve this mission, Miami Homes For All (MHFA) impacts the problem at its full scale by improving systems like public policy and housing finance, so that they produce more affordable housing, preserve what we have, and increase marginalized residents’ access to it. 

The Need

Everyone feels the pain of Miami’s housing shortage. Maybe your rent or property insurance recently went up 30% from one year to the next, or your kids’ preschool teacher had to move away, or you know someone staying with friends and family because they cannot find a place they can afford. Half of all Miami-Dade households pay more than they can afford for housing costs. According to recent data analyzed by University of Florida, Miami-Dade has a shortage of over 90,000 homes that are affordable to renters earning under $75,000. 

Our Impact

MHFA has been making crucial strides to solving this massive problem. Last year alone, we:

Fought Youth Homelessness

• Won $8.4 million in HUD funds to address youth homelessness, in partnership with the Homeless Trust.

• Recruited landlords to set aside 526 units for youth and families exiting homelessness. Placed over 150 families in permanent housing. 

• Facilitated a collaborative of youth-serving organizations (HOMY) to coordinate efforts to end youth homelessness.

• Provided a leadership development program for 8 youth who have experienced homelessness.

Increased the Supply of Affordable Housing

• Committed $1.2 million and technical assistance to 10 Black developers and property owners in support of 14 small, multifamily affordable housing projects. Raised over $3 million in public and private subsidy for these projects.

Promoted Priority Housing Solutions

• Shared high impact, achievable solutions by hosting the Housing and Health Summit and The Housing Nexus event series.

• Drafted budget priorities and policy solutions with the Greater Miami Housing Alliance, which we facilitate. 

• Published our Affordable Housing Pipeline Analysis to understand the financial needs of housing deals that have site control today.

• Published our updated Housing Needs Assessment in partnership with University of Florida.
