We've Got Awesome Down to a Science!

Surf Skate Science began with eight students in the aftermath of the Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy in Parkland, providing an alternative to traditional education. Today, just eight years later, we proudly serve over 2,500 families each year.

As parents of three children who struggled in traditional schools, we created a fun and engaging program where ALL kids can excel. So, we transform our local skatepark or surf break into a classroom, creating a dynamic and enjoyable learning environment.

Our Mission

Surf Skate Science is dedicated to creating STEAM-based education and career exposure experiences for all students, regardless of physical or financial ability. Our hands-on program enhances each student's potential to:

  • Innovate and think critically
  • Adapt and collaborate
  • Meet challenges and solve problems
  • Be resilient and lead well
  • Impact others through their passion
  • Communicate effectively

Our Approach

We use an educational approach that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) to provide real-world learning opportunities through investigations, problem-solving, and evidence-based explanations. These access points guide student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. Our classes are designed to develop higher-level thinking skills by connecting classroom learning to the real world through hands-on investigations, equipping the next generation for STEAM-based fields.

Our Vision

Our dream is to open the first action sports-focused maker lab by 2025. This facility will give kids the ability to invent, explore, and create through 3D printing, woodworking, electronics, music, video, surfboard design, skatepark design, and skateboarding. Our goal is to connect STEAM to the things kids love.

Surf Skate Science is a program of Christian Skaters International. We do not discriminate based on faith background and welcome all families regardless of faith, financial ability, unique learning abilities, or physical abilities. Our desire is for every child to find their purpose and passion.

Examples of Learning in Action

  • Marine Science: Work alongside real scientists on research vessels to study sharks or coral.
  • Architecture: Learn architecture through skatepark design.
  • Engineering: Design their own surfboard, skateboard, helmet, or skate shoes.
  • Coding: Create apps that impact the future of our Everglades, coral reefs, and more.
  • Art and Video: Use art and video to share their passions.
  • Advocacy: Learn to advocate for cleaner oceans and more open access to places for skateboarding and surfing.

Help us share the exciting ways kids learn. Your support on Give Miami Day 2024 will make a difference!

Our Vision

Surf Skate Science exists to expose EVERY child to STEAM education and 21st-century skills through the exciting lens of action sports. We’ve got AWESOME down to a science!
