Progressive Firefighter's Association Charities, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

The Progressive Firefighters Assoc. Charities, Inc. (PFAC) Miami Dade County, Florida was organized in 1978 because of the awareness of the increasing complexity of problems experienced by our African American sisters and brothers in the fire service and in our communities. The PFAC addresses recruitment, and the retention and promotion of qualified African American firefighters. The numerous impediments that affect our community: health concerns, fire prevention and safety, social, economic and political issues are also a part of the PFAC 's agenda. Since its inception, the PFAC has continued a long and unwavering commitment to combat the fires of racism, inequality and injustices that still permeate the fire service and our community. The PFAC has assisted hundreds of individuals interested in careers in the fire service and has facilitated many worthwhile activities in the community. Some of the more noted activities include, but are not limited to: blood pressure screenings, voter registration drives, installing smoke detectors, CPR training, Fire Safety Training, Toys-for-tots, Turkeys for Thanksgiving, Sickle Cell anemia fund raising, DCPS school youth mentor program, Inner-City S.O.U.P. Mentoring Program, Martial Arts, and a M-DCC Scholarship Foundation. We also host a Christmas Dinner Dance for Seniors, and a Halloween Party for children. In 2013 we began a learn-to-swim safety program, which has certified over 1200 children to-date and we have taught them CPR, basic first aid, and AED usage. We have also assisted individuals who are interested in a career in the fire services with the tools they will need in preparation for taking the exam and more.
The PFAC will continue to call on its membership, as well as all those who believe in equality and justice for all, to "enjoin a new plain of service" grounded in UNITY and SUPPORT for each other. To this aim, we must strive to care for our children and elders, love our spouses, and help those who are in need.
