While our season productions are the most visible part of our mission, the equal aspect that goes unseen to the majority of the public is our education department. Give Miami Day serves to highlight these key programs serving so many young people in Miami in addition to the world class productions we create at the Colony Theatre.
Arts Education Matters! Miami New Drama is committed to youth in our communities and using theater as a tool for transformative educational artistic experiences for all.
We started our education programs with one student matinee of our multilingual version of Thornton Wilder's OUR TOWN serving about 400 students. This launched a movement and we are now consistently serving thousands of students annually.
Each season we offer:
Student matinees at the Colony Theatre
An invite for schools to come see morning performances from our own MiND season of shows, including a talk-back! All programming, buses, and tickets are provided free-of-charge to students and schools.
Educational touring productions
We modernize and adapt stories into a play, which we tour around Miami-Dade public schools and community centers. The tour includes talkbacks and workshops allowing students to engage further with the productions and discuss the show's themes.
STEAM classes at local schools
Where Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics meets the Arts, providing students with skills for inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
In-school residencies
Bringing multiple theater artists to middle or high schools for a multiple week-long residency which develops artistry and creativity in the students.
Theater Intensives
Summer programs for ages 7-18 specializing from performance to design - all aspects of becoming a well-rounded artist!
Notable Awards: In 2024, Miami New Drama received prestigious accolades, including the Carbonell Award for Outstanding Production of a Play ("Las Aventuras de Juan Planchard") and the Remy Award for Children's Theater in South Florida. Other major honors include the 2023 Gault Grant Award and 2022 Thornton Wilder Prize to name a few.
Miami New Drama is a theater company committed to artistic excellence and groundbreaking work unique to this diverse and extraordinary city with a vision of theatre as a powerful form of social engagement, in residence at the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.
