Miami MoCAAD kicked off 2023 Soul Basel and Miami Art Week fully immersed in the digital space with a groundbreaking documentary and digital exhibition "This Life: Black Life in the Time of Now," premiered on December 4, 2023, at The Urban (1000 NW 2nd Ave) from 7:30-10:30 pm.
âThis Lifeâ delves into the intricate tapestry of contemporary Black existence through augmented and virtual reality experiences that transcend geographical boundaries. It features the artists Mark Thomas Gibson (Miami), Renold Laurent (Haiti), Nontsikelelo Mutiti (Zimbabwe), and Rosana Paulino (Brazil). The curator is Dr. Anthony Bogues, inaugural director of Brown Universityâs Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice.
The documentary is produced by 5x Regional Emmy Award winner, Michael Anderson (Miami), with spoken word by award winning poet, Christell Victoria Roach (Miami) and an original composition by Emmy nominated, Alexander Star (South Florida). New World Symphony will provide its giant mobile screen and the Miami-Dade County Public Library System will lend its Technobus.
On March 21, 2024, Miami MoCAAD premiered âThe Day I Heard the Sounds of the World: ARt Connecting CommunitiesâOvertown and Coral Gablesâ by artist Marielle Plaisir at the Historic Lyric Theater (819 NW 2nd Ave) in Overtown. The commissioned installation incorporates interactive technology and was accompanied by a virtual exhibit and documentary.
On June 4, 2024, Miami MoCAAD, in partnership with the Barnes Foundation, co-hosted an art talk featuring Miami-born artist Mark Thomas Gibson in conversation with James Claiborne, deputy director for community engagement at the Barnes. Gibson, now based in Philadelphia, works across a range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and prints, to deliver incisive, witty, and visually compelling commentary on American culture. Gibson discussed his creative process as well as his experience participating in Miami MoCAADâs This Life: Black Life in the Time of Now, an augmented and virtual reality exhibition exploring contemporary Black life.
Miami MoCAAD Unveiled "Overtown Pitch: Game Changers" Mural Celebrating Soccer Icons and Community Spirit last June 27, 2024. Through an innovative blend of art and technology, the mural features an augmented reality and digital component, inviting viewers to engage in a penalty kick soccer game in the mural's context and learn about the artist via augmented reality.
These projects are possible thanks to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and the Southeast Overtown Park/West CRA.
