Founded in 1989, Miami Light Project is a not-for-profit cultural organization that supports the vanguard of contemporary performance - dance, music, theater and multimedia artists who are internationally recognized for risk-taking innovation, technical virtuosity and thought-provoking content.
Our work places artists at the center of everything we do, and our commitment to supporting artists as agents of change has contributed significantly to Miami’s recognition as an international center for art and culture. Our organizational values are rooted in community-building, and our community has thrived because of the impact of our artistic programs. We live out our values through three primary program areas:
Program activities include:
Here & Now – the first of its kind program dedicated to commissioning and producing new work by Miami-based emerging performance and multimedia artists.
Artists-in-Residence at The Light Box – an extended residency program designed to provide mid-career artists from Miami and from across the world to create and develop new work.
ScreenDance Miami – an annual festival that supports dancers, choreographers and filmmakers who are forging a bold art discipline – Dance on Film. The festival supports the development of dance created for the camera and special film adaptations of existing dance performances.
International Cultural Exchange - a 5-year partnership with the Centre for the Less Good Idea - an interdisciplinary theatrical incubator founded by world-renowned and award winning South African artist William Kentridge, and his artistic associate Bronwyn Lace. The initiative is rooted in extended performance-based residencies in Miami, FL and Johannesburg in South Africa.
Global Cuba Fest – an internationally recognized festival featuring the leading musicians from Cuba and the Cuban Diaspora. It is a celebration of Cuba’s unparalleled musical heritage. Since 2008, we have presented over 40 acclaimed Cuban artists and companies in Miami through the annual Global Cuba Fest.
Technical Fellowship Program – a program that provides free technical theater training and paid work experience for Miami-based emerging technicians.
Out of the Box – through strategic partnerships with nonprofit organizations including artist-led collectives, community-based organizations and universities/colleges, we develop meaningful ongoing engagement with local residents and students.
Miami Light Project's mission is to commission and present live performances by today's leading contemporary dance, music and theater artists from around the world; to support the development of emerging and established performing artists living in Miami; and to cultivate passionate and engaged audiences that reflect the diverse cultural make-up of South Florida. Miami Light Project is an art and culture forum to explore the issues that define contemporary society.
