Hermanos de la Calle

Hermanos de la Calle (HDLC) is a grassroots nonprofit organization founded in Miami ten years ago. What began as a small group of families offering warm meals and conversations to homeless individuals in downtown Miami and Overtown has evolved into a robust organization. With love and compassion as our core values, HDLC serves hundreds of homeless individuals today, connecting them with resources across Miami to help them rebuild their lives. From family reunification and shelter to housing opportunities and treatment programs, HDLC is a guiding hand for Miami’s homeless community.

Our latest program, Hearts for Life, provides support to pregnant women in need. Through this initiative, we help women access temporary housing, practical resources, and spiritual guidance, creating a supportive foundation for them and their babies. We are committed to nurturing these mothers, helping them prepare for a healthy start to life.

Our Hearts for Life Helpline has received 31 referrals since the start of the project on June 1, 2024. We perform an initial intake and assist callers by connecting them to appropriate social services on a case-by-case basis. There is a significant need for shelter and assistance for vulnerable pregnant women; we have received calls from other counties in Florida and even from out of state.

From these referrals, we have housed seven pregnant mothers. Four beautiful babies have been born—three boys and one girl; all are healthy and safe, residing with their respective moms at the Hearts for Life house.

Mater Dei Home has room for 10 mothers and their babies, with shared rooms. Hearts for Life plans to expand capacity in the near future (2025), hoping to provide housing for mothers with other children in addition to their babies.

Our goal is to help 20 mothers this year, each with a personalized path to independence. We aim to provide $5,000 per mother to support their transition to a stable and self-sufficient life.
