Dream in Green is a small but mighty organization that has been serving the community for over 17 years. Our vision is to ensure a sustainable community through environmental stewardship. Our values are RESPONSIBILITY, LEADERSHIP, TEAMWORK, and ENGAGEMENT.
The Green Schools Challenge (GSC) promotes sustainable behaviors and practices at K-12 schools through a science-based learning curriculum, personal research, and team building. The programs develop student collaboration, leadership skills, and mastery of STEAM-based subjects. The program aims to bring learning to life by engaging students in hands-on projects and activities demonstrating clear connections between individual resource use and its impact on our environment, community, and climate. Since 2006 the program has reached 84,000 students, with an additional 30,000 teachers, and school staff members. The GSC has saved Miami-Dade County Public Schools approximately $3.8 million in energy costs by conserving 41.1 million kilowatt hours of electricity through simple, no-cost, behavior changes. These student-led initiatives helped reduce or offset approximately 62.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions.
DIG also delivers the Water and Energy Learning and Behavior Workshops (WE-LAB) program, the product of a partnership between Dream in Green and Miami-Dade County's Office of Resilience to educate residents about the critical interdependence between water and energy use. WE-LAB's innovation is on achieving long-lasting and ethics-based water and energy use behavior change by providing participants with information and tools to track and analyze their own water and energy consumption patterns. Since the inception of WE-LAB, DIG has hosted over 125 workshops reaching over 4,000 households throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
New outreach programs implemented in 2022 include a platform to help Miami-Dade County residents recycle more effectively and partnerships that focus on conservation. Our Recyclepedia site presents waste reduction methods and how to reduce contamination and landfill waste. DIG organized dune restoration, invasive species removal, and lunchtime discussions with local businesses to promote environmental stewardship.
Dream in Green (DIG) was founded in 2006 to address the unique environmental challenges that threaten the future viability of South Florida. Our mission is to empower individuals, especially youth, to lead in the response to climate change and other environmental challenges facing our community. We assist diverse organizations, including schools, households, local governments and businesses to reduce their environmental footprint. Through establishing partnerships in our community, we develop, implement and oversee educational programs and workshops that promote environmentally sustainable behaviors among all age groups, with a particular emphasis on our youth.
DIG is best-known for the Green Schools Challenge, which provides dedicated sustainability education to K-12 students in public and private schools across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, including some of the most underserved and at-risk communities in South Florida. DIG has directly served over 100,000 individuals.
