B. Wright Leadership Academy

A nonprofit organization

Our History. B. Wright Leadership Academy (B. Wright) started as a conversation between
professional basketball power forward Brent Wright and his uncle. Wright had a dream for a new
school in the heart of his hometown, Miami's Liberty City. This school
would provide inner-city youth the resources and supports they need
to succeed in school and in life. Wright retired from professional
basketball in 2014 after a successful 15-year career overseas,
departed Europe, flew home to Miami, and drove straight to the next
chapter of his life, the B. Wright Leadership Academy.
Our Success. B. Wright celebrated its sixth school year in 2019/20,
welcoming over 200 students. We provide a robust curriculum,
personalized to maximize the engagement and success of each and
every student. Our supportive environment builds a sense of
community and provides meaningful opportunities for second chances. While students often
come to B. Wright after struggling in other school settings, 97.3% of students advancing to the
next grade each year.
Our Need. The vast majority of B. Wright students are from low-income and single-parent
homes - families challenged to put food on the table and make ends meet. At B. Wright, we
work hard to provide for students' needs, including nutritional meals, student scholarships,
transportation to and from school, supplementary services for students and their families, and
even Thanksgiving provisions and holiday gifts.
