Welcome to The Historic Saint Agnes Episcopal Church powered by Give Miami Day!
The Historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church is one of Miami’s oldest and most iconic African-American congregations, serving as a beacon of faith, culture, and community for over 127 years. Founded in 1898 by a devoted group of Anglican Bahamians in search of a spiritual home, the church has stood as a symbol of resilience and unity in Miami's historic Overtown district.
The congregation’s humble beginnings trace back to its first service held in the home of Mrs. Louise Newbold, a moment lovingly remembered as being "born in a washtub." By 1901, through the generosity of Henry Flagler, the church received a land donation on 8th Street, where its first building was erected. The name "St. Agnes" was chosen to honor the founders’ deep connection to their Bahamian roots and to pay tribute to St. Agnes Church in Nassau, Bahamas.
As the congregation flourished, the need for a larger space became evident. In 1923, St. Agnes moved to its current location, with members of the community playing a hands-on role in constructing the new sanctuary. This enduring commitment is a testament to the congregation's unwavering faith and dedication, laying the foundation for a legacy that has transcended generations.
For more than a century, St. Agnes Episcopal Church has been a cornerstone of spiritual and civic life in Overtown. Beyond its role as a place of worship, the church has fostered youth mentorship, supported senior members, hosted civic and social events, and provided critical outreach to those in need. Whether offering solace to the afflicted, celebrating life’s milestones, or advocating for social justice, St. Agnes has consistently been a source of hope and light in the community.
Today, The Historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church continues to honor its mission of faith and service, standing firm as a spiritual and humanitarian anchor in Overtown. Rooted in a proud heritage yet focused on the future, St. Agnes remains a place where all are welcome, inspired, and empowered to carry forward its enduring legacy of love, resilience, and community.
Our mission is to boldly and unwaveringly proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Through worship, service, study, and fellowship, we strive to embody His teachings in every aspect of our lives. We are committed to being a beacon of hope, compassion, and action—working collectively and individually to uplift our brothers and sisters from despair and hopelessness. Our dedication extends beyond the church walls, as we actively engage with both our Church Community and the larger community, creating a living, committed presence that reflects God’s love and grace.
