Vision

To provide research and education that shapes the future of ocean conservation

Background

Ocean First Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific research and education to shape the future of ocean conservation. Sharks are the focus of the work, and they help us tell a much bigger story about the ocean and what is happening to it. Ocean First Institute has led pivotal scientific research for over a decade through projects, field courses, expeditions, and institutional partnerships. Founded by dive experts and marine biologists, the Institute brings together key stakeholders to ensure the permanent health of ocean ecosystems.

Ocean First Institute programs operate daily to protect marine life and educate communities through our work in Florida and Colorado. In Florida, we conduct vital research in the Florida Keys and Biscayne Bay, focusing on shark conservation, plastic pollution, and goliath grouper studies. Our graduate students in our Ocean First Fellows Program are mentored and given hands-on guidance by our leading scientists. Through our partnership with South Florida Water Management, our science team monitors water quality and fish health in the St. Lucie Estuary. Our goal is to ensure the health of these ecosystems for future generations.

Our educational programs have significantly impacted students and communities in Colorado and Florida. OFI has empowered students to become environmental stewards through hands-on marine science and microplastics programs. These programs are free to schools and provide real-world science experiences connecting inland communities to ocean conservation.

The educational programs continue to grow and expand in Miami-Dade County. Supported by donors and corporate and foundation partners, our bilingual Educational Program Coordinator and comprehensive K-12 curriculum will make free marine science and microplastic pollution education accessible to even more students, helping to inspire and educate the next generation of ocean advocates.

With your support, we can bring our proven programs to Miami, fostering a love of the ocean and a commitment to its protection in young people. Please consider a gift today to help us grow our educational efforts and reach new communities.
