Friends of the Commodore Trail are on a mission to enhance life in Coconut Grove by revitalizing the historic Trail that runs through our community.

The Trail connects us in so many ways. It brings us together for walks, runs and bike rides. It passes eleven Grove schools and diverse houses of worship. It’s our route to Grove playgrounds, waterfront, parks, and sports facilities. Historically significant sites from Vizcaya to The Kampong keep us in touch with our past, and our vibrant business district provides us with social gathering places.

Today the “Trail” is more of an idea than it is ideal. The five miles from Cocoplum Circle to The Rickenbacker Causeway are a disjointed series of sidewalks and bike lanes that widen, narrow and in many spots disappear altogether. Effective crossing mechanisms are lacking and Trail users often feel unsafe.

The Friends are on it! As a volunteer advocacy group, the Friends are committed to being the eyes, ears, and voice of the Trail.

The Trailblazer team is trained to spot issues and then lobby the county for immediate improvements such as pot-hole repairs, broken crossing signals, and debris removal. Working closely with local government, the Friends influence the long-range Master Plans for the Trail which are in development by the City and the County. With diligence, we review plans and then engage the community and outside experts on whether proposed design solutions meet our needs. Then we push for the best and safest designs. Sometimes that means gathering thousands of petition signatures. Often it is sitting across the table from city planners and working through the issues.

Your donations and involvement help the Friends advocacy efforts to make the Commodore Trail everything that you want it to be.

Please join us on our path forward.

Mission

Emphasizing safety, beauty and functionality, Friends of the Commodore Trail advocate for improvement and upkeep of the Trail to to ensure pedestrians, cyclists and motorists can enjoy all this historic route has to offer. We organize events, strengthen community and push governments to act.

• As a Crown Jewel of Miami-Dade, the Trail links the people, histories and futures of the Grove's generations.

• As an alternative transportation corridor, the Trail will ultimately provide a safe route for the thousands of residents, visitors, commuters and students that use it each day.

• As an environmental corridor, the Trail nurtures a tree canopy that serves wildlife, birds and people, while buffering the waters of Biscayne Bay from land-side pollutants.

• As a lifestyle destination, the Trail's visitors grow the economy and health of all Miami.

Friends of the Commodore Trail (FCT) is the driving force behind this evolution. Its members organize and use their powers of influence to make it happen.
