ICA Miami

The Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (ICA Miami), is dedicated to promoting the work of contemporary artists, and to the exchange of art and ideas throughout the Miami region and internationally. Through an energetic calendar of exhibitions and programs, and its collections, ICA Miami provides an international platform for the work of established and emerging artists, and advances the public appreciation and understanding of the most innovative and experimental art of our time.

In the beginning of this 2015-2016 year, ICA embarked on this ambitious program by partnering with seven community organizations: Detention Center for Juvenile Justice; Lotus House; Hands2Help; Breakthrough Miami at Carrollton; Urgent, Inc.; Miami Children's Initiative, South Florida Cares, Superfriends Afterschool Program at Williams Park, Citrus Health and Pridelines. Working with Resident ICA Artist, Jayme Gershen, ICAN focused on the overarching theme of Identity using digital media throughout all the sites, however, the method in which these projects manifested varied depending on the direction participants at each site chose to explore. In doing so, Gershen created a democratic environment where the participants' voices were the driving force behind their distinctive projects. The curriculum included in-class activities and discussions that helped unpacked the term "identity" and helped participants connect their own realities to this larger theme.
