Bakehouse Art Complex

Bakehouse is Miami’s cultural compound. Founded in 1986 in a former industrial bakery, we celebrate two milestones—our 40th anniversary and the centennial of our 1926 building, originally home to the American Bakeries Company. As one of South Florida’s largest and longest-standing nonprofit artist-serving communities, Bakehouse has been a vital incubator for creative talent, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cultural dialogue.

Over the past eight years and building on our founders’ vision, we have laid the groundwork to undertake a major transformation to meet the needs of 21st-century creative practices and audiences. Now, as we celebrate these anniversaries, we begin our campaign to fund the future, where Miami’s cultural capital rises.

Our vision: As cultural alchemists, we engineer conditions where artistic creativity, intellectual rigor, and civic innovation become something new. Not mixing. Not blending. FUSION.

Our mission: To eliminate economic pressures facing Miami’s creative professionals, and, acting as cross-pollination architects, dismantling silos, fostering collaboration, and building bridges across disciplines. We aim to ignite an ecosystem where artistic, intellectual, and civic capital fuse, losing their individual boundaries to create something totally new. A cultural compound where culture compounds.

Today, Bakehouse is home to a dynamic community of over 100 artists deriving from diverse backgrounds and working across a wide spectrum of media. Here artists refine their craft, collaborate with peers and institutions near and far, and share their work and practice with the public.

Our future campus masterplan, conceived in collaboration with Michael Maltzan Architecture, includes the renovation of this iconic 1926 building and the transformation of our 2.6-acre campus as a cultural compound. It imagines a four-acre live-work-play campus that includes affordable housing, new community and cultural spaces, and open green spaces.
