Mission

On the shores of Biscayne Bay in the heart of Coconut Grove is the magnificent 40-acre Barnacle State Historic Park, including a mangrove forest and The Barnacle, the oldest home in Miami-Dade County still in its original location. The combination of this park and its structures’ natural beauty, historical significance, stunning bayfront panoramic views, and centrality in a vibrant town is unparalleled in Miami. Call it the Grove’s backyard or its oasis, but whatever we call it, The Barnacle’s preservation and maximum use and enjoyment will preserve the Grove’s character and keep it distinct. The Barnacle Society, Inc. is a volunteer, non-profit Citizen Support Organization created to generate public awareness, education, and financial support for the preservation and maintenance of The Barnacle Historic State Park. The Barnacle property is the legacy of Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe (1851-1933), one of Coconut Grove's most interesting pioneers. Munroe, originally from Staten Island, moved to Coconut Grove in 1886, built the Boathouse where he founded the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, and served as its Commodore for 22 years. He also organized the first Washington's Birthday Regatta, which is rerun annually to this day.
