The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) promotes awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the ways in which architecture and urban design influence the built environment and enhance the quality of life in the community as well as promoting enhanced discourse about architecture and urban design in Miami. MCAD functions as a resource for the architectural profession and the community. MCAD is home to the American Institute of Architects Miami (AIA Miami) and operates the Downtown Miami Welcome Center in partnership with the Miami Downtown Development Authority and the Greater Miami and the Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Since late 2013, MCAD has become the destination for everyone interested in the built environment-residents, tourists, public servants, developers, builders, students, and professionals alike. MCAD celebrates the City's vibrant architecture and urban fabric through exhibitions, lectures, tours, film series, and programs that aim to reveal the richness of design in Miami. MCAD houses a gallery, lecture/seminar facilities, as well as meeting and event space.
Since our inception, MCAD has collaborated with AIA Miami in organizing ARCHtober, celebrating Architecture & Design! The month includes lectures, tours, an architecture scavenger hunt, an exhibit, Miami Architecture & Design Film Festival, and design awards. We have managed to pivot quite successfully in offering our events online, and we are beginning to hold them in person, with safety measures in place.
MCAD has also created two on-going programs, Active Design Miami (ADM) and Black Architects in the Making (BAM). ADM(www.activedesignmiami.org) provides architects, urban designers, and municipalities with a manual of 69 evidence-based strategies and policies for creating healthier buildings, streets, and public spaces. BAM (www.bammiami.org) was developed out of the desire to introduce more children of color to the idea of architecture as a career.
The Miami Center for Architecture & Design (MCAD) promotes awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the ways in which architecture and design influence and enhance the quality of life in our community.
