The Homestead Soup Kitchen served its first meal on Thanksgiving of 1983 and was incorporated in January of 1984. A non-profit organization run solely by volunteers, HSK serves a hot lunch to anyone who arrives at our door during serving hours. Meals are served every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from noon until 1 pm.
When the Covid pandemic hit, many organizations and businesses were forced to shut their doors, but HSK managed to stay open. In fact, we never missed a serving day despite running the entire organization with a just small, dedicated volunteer crew. In 2020, HSK served 23,351 meals, an increase of over 8,000 meals from the year before! In 2021, that number jumped to 36,788 meals, and in 2022, we served 32,444 meals. Last year we served over 41,000 meals, and we are on track to do even more this year!
Under the best circumstances, fulfilling our mission of feeding the hungry is an expensive undertaking, but it is more so now as we serve more people and the cost of food and other essential expenses has risen.
This is where your generosity can help us continue with our important community work. We share a similar passion--serving the local community--and together we can continue to provide a much-needed service to our residents.
It is the mission of the Homestead Soup Kitchen to serve those members of our community in need of a hot meal, regardless of circumstances, by having a "no questions asked" policy. The Homestead Soup Kitchen provides meals to individuals and families of the Greater Homestead/Florida City area and beyond in a non-discriminatory environment. There are no requirements for receiving a meal--no identification required, no needs test administered, no questions asked. If a person shows up during our serving days and times, they receive a meal.
