WHO WE ARE

The Florida Justice Center (FLJC) is a nonprofit organization working to expand economic opportunity, strengthen families, and build safer, more equitable communities by breaking down the barriers created by the criminal legal system.

We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to build a stable, fulfilling life, regardless of their involvement with the justice system. Yet, the consequences of an arrest or conviction can extend far beyond an individual, affecting their ability to secure employment, find housing, pursue education, participate in civic life, and provide for their families.

These barriers can perpetuate cycles of poverty and instability across generations, affecting not only justice-impacted individuals but also their children and communities.

FLJC works to change that trajectory. By combining legal support, community education, and barrier removal, we help individuals reclaim opportunities, families build economic stability, and young people access pathways to a brighter future.

We envision communities where justice involvement does not define a person's potential, families have the resources to thrive, and every generation has a fair chance to succeed.

WHO WE HELP

We serve justice-impacted individuals, their families, and their children, with a focus on people and communities disproportionately affected by the criminal legal system and economic hardship.

We recognize that the impact of justice involvement extends beyond the individual. When a parent faces barriers to employment, housing, or education, the entire family can feel the effects. When young people grow up surrounded by limited opportunities and persistent barriers, those challenges can shape their future.

By supporting individuals and families today, we aim to expand opportunity for the next generation, disrupt intergenerational cycles of poverty and justice involvement, and help communities thrive.

WHAT WE DO

We provide legal services, education, and community-based support that help justice-impacted people overcome barriers and move toward greater economic security, family stability, and civic participation.

Our services include:

• Voting rights restoration and eligibility verification to help people exercise their right to participate in democracy.
• Sealing and expungement of arrest records to help eligible individuals overcome barriers to employment, housing, education, and other opportunities.
• Probation assistance to help eligible individuals pursue early termination or modifications to their terms of supervision.
• Clemency applications related to professional licensure, running for public office, firearm rights, and jury service, where applicable.
• Community Second Chance Events that connect South Florida residents with information, resources, and support.

Through this work, we seek to expand access to opportunity, strengthen family and community well-being, and support the conditions that help young people build successful futures.

WHY IT MATTERS

A person's involvement with the justice system should not determine the future of their entire family.

When legal and systemic barriers prevent people from finding work, securing housing, pursuing education, or participating in civic life, the consequences can ripple across generations. Removing those barriers creates more opportunities for individuals to support their families, for children to pursue their potential, and for communities to become safer and more resilient.

We believe that expanding opportunity, supporting families, and investing in the futures of young people are essential parts of building stronger communities.
