WHO WE ARE
===========
The Florida Justice Center (FLJC) is a non-profit legal aid organization dedicated to fighting for justice and fairness in the Florida legal system. We work tirelessly to break down barriers and empower individuals impacted by the justice system, particularly those facing poverty and discrimination.
Here's what makes FLJC unique:
WHO WE HELP
============
This year we will empower OVER 6,000 individuals by helping them break down barriers to reentry. Our clients are 72% Black, 12% white, 10% Hispanic, and 1% Asian. They are 53% female. They have an average income of only $12,800 per year -- well below the $29,598 average income in Miami-Dade County. We help those most in need, those in underserved communities, and those disproportionately affected by the criminal legal system.
WHAT WE DO
===========
We provide the following services to help justice-involved people avoid disenfranchisement and have a better chance at success:
- Voting rights restoration and voting rights eligibility verification
- Sealing and expungement of arrest records
- Probation assistance with early termination and modification of terms of supervision
- Clemency applications for professional licensure, running for public office, firearm rights, and serving on a jury
- Community Second Chance Events in South Florida
FACTS
===========
- The collateral consequences of a conviction are the legal and social restrictions that can continue to impact a person long after they have served their sentence. These consequences can create significant barriers to re-entry and make it difficult for individuals to rebuild their lives. This includes barriers to housing, employment, and education, which are basic needs for successful reentry.
- An arrest, even without a conviction, can lower someone's earning potential and employability by up to 50%.
- To qualify for sealing or expungement (arrest record clearing) in Florida, you cannot be convicted of a crime.
- We are non-partisan
To empower individuals by providing legal support, community education, and removing barriers to success caused by the criminal justice system.
