Advancing Sickle Cell Advocacy Project, Inc. (ASAP) was established in 2015 as a nonprofit organization with the mission to "change the narrative" around the challenges associated with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). ASAP works to raise awareness, educate the community, and advocate on behalf of SCD warriors living with this condition. Today, ASAP currently serves more than 200 South Florida residents.
The goal of ASAP, an organization composed of advocates, caregivers, supporters, and individuals living with SCD, is to bridge the gap between the medical community and patients who deserve a voice in the fight against a "silent disease" that speaks volumes in the lives of those who are affected.
Sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 Americans. It occurs among about 1 in every 365 African American births and about 1 in 16,000 Hispanic-American births. 1 in 13 African Americans are carriers of sickle cell trait, with most of them unaware. Florida is in the top three states with the highest number of people living with Sickle Cell Disease.
In the last nine years, ASAP has provided a wide range of networking, awareness, and educational services. Through community outreach and educational events, we encourage positive relationships between our sickle cell and medical communities. All of our programs and events are funded through sponsorship and fundraising opportunities.
Some of our programs and events include:
• Monthly support groups for adults and teens
• Education-based seminar and workshop collaborations with various schools, universities, and churches.
• Hospitality Committee that visits and follows up with sick and hospitalized warriors.
• Annual Sickle Cell Picnic & Family Resource Fair
• Appreciation Brunch for sickle cell caregivers
• Thanksgiving Harvest Luncheon
• Holiday Toy Drive
• Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway to sickle cell families
• Health fairs
• Virtual Chronic Pain Self-Management Program
• Advocacy workshops and town halls
• Community of Parents Empowered (C.O.P.E.) Program
Advancing Sickle Cell Advocacy Project, Inc. Mission is to change the narrative concerning sickle cell disease by bringing awareness and educating the community, advocating on behalf of sickle cell warriors, and bridging the gap between the medical community and sickle cell clients. We are serving as a voice to the voiceless on a silent disease that needs to be spoken up for.
